Swimming Tip 1 – Stretch & Depth

The first tip is one of the most important for swimmers and even more so for swim WEST swimmers! In order to swim correctly you must know how deep to stretch your arm into the water.
Olympian and competitive swimmers stretch their arms trying to reach their palms as close as possible to the surface. They do this in order to maximize stroke, amplitude and speed.
But does your body resemble the an Olympic swimmer’s body? Are you as strong and flexible as they are?
By performing a quick flexibility test you can find out where to position your palm in order to pull more water and to protect your lower back and shoulders from any injury.

The stretching the correct depth you’ll be able to elongate your back and protect your lower back whilst learning how to swim or improving your swimming technique. It will also allow you to swim smoothly, in hydrodynamic fashion, without creating focal resistance with your arms, as many swimmers tend to do. Another benefit is the extra 40cm you get with every glide, which is significant!

It’s important to understand that 99.9% of the population above 18 years old can’t stretch their arms quite like Michael Phelps, Ian Thorpe or Missy Franklin do. You should adapt your swimming technique to your flexibility level.
